Rule Action Billboard Mode for Meshes

Overview

The Billboard feature allows you to set specific meshes in your 3D configuration to always face the camera, regardless of how the user rotates the model. This is particularly useful for creating signs, labels, or informational elements that should always be visible to the user.

Setting Up Billboard Mode

Accessing Billboard Rules

Navigate to the Rules section in your configuration
Create a new rule or edit an existing one
Name your rule appropriately (e.g., "Billboard Condition")

Configuring Billboard Settings

Basic Settings

Action Type: Select "Set Billboard Mode" from the dropdown
Add your other rule conditions as normal

Billboard Types

You can select from different billboard modes:

Full Billboard: Object completely faces the camera on all axes, ensuring maximum visibility for text and interactive elements that need to remain readable from any angle
Y-axis: Object rotates only vertically while maintaining upright position - perfect for signs and displays that should stay oriented upright while following camera movement
X-axis: Object tilts up/down while keeping horizontal position fixed - ideal for elements that need vertical tracking while maintaining their depth and sideways orientation
Z-axis: Object rotates in place around its depth axis while keeping its screen position - suited for elements that should spin without changing their relative position to the view

Mesh Selection

Select the specific meshes that should use the billboard effect
You can select multiple meshes to apply the effect to

Material Overrides

You can also override materials for billboard meshes:

Consider setting billboarded meshes to Unlit material
This prevents lighting artifacts as the mesh rotates to face the camera
Without an unlit material, you may see unrealistic lighting as the mesh rotates

How It Works

When your configuration is viewed:

The main model rotates normally as users navigate around it
Meshes with the billboard effect will automatically rotate to face the camera
This ensures that important information is always visible to the user

Use Cases

Informational Signs: Add text or icons that are always readable
Labels: Ensure product labels are visible regardless of rotation
Interactive Elements: Create clickable items that are always accessible
Highlighting Features: Draw attention to specific parts of your configuration

Important Considerations

Intersection: Billboard meshes may intersect with other geometry if positioned too close to the model
Lighting: Consider using unlit materials for billboard meshes to prevent unrealistic lighting effects

Examples

Example: Product Label

Use billboards to ensure product labels are always visible to the user, making key information readable from any angle.

Example: Interactive Button

Create an interactive element that remains accessible regardless of the model's orientation.

Advanced Tips

Combine billboard meshes with highlight effects for attention-grabbing elements
Use billboard mode with clickable items to improve user experience
For complex configurations, use billboard mode selectively on the most important informational elements
